Album

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is the second album by the American rock band Neutral Milk Hotel, released on February 10, 1998 by Merge Records. Characterized by a lo-fi sound influenced by indie rock and psychedelic folk, it contains guitars and drums paired with less conventional instruments such as a singing saw, zanzithophone, and Uilleann pipes. The album's tempo sometimes abruptly shifts from song to song, while heavy layers of distortion permeate the tracks. The lyrics are surrealistic and. It was released in the United States on February 10, 1998 on Merge Records and May 1998 on Blue Rose Records in the United Kingdom. Jeff Mangum moved from Athens, Georgia to Denver, Colorado to prepare the bulk of the album's material with producer Robert Schneider, this time at Schneider's newly created Pet Sounds Studio at the home of Jim McIntyre. The reissue of Neutral Milk Hotels cult classic offers another opportunity to measure its reach and influence. Jeff Mangums masterpiece mixes hushed folk, explosive brass, and unforgettable vocals that touch on pain, loss, memory, and hope. So, then, seven years later Domino reissues In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and the arguments can begin anew. Got this for $9 at Barnes & Nobel during their 50% off vinyl sale. Glady would have paid the sticker price for this release. Nice, flat, clean vinyl. I don't have an OG to compare it to but it's better than my CD.
Froststalker
The original is far superior to the represses. I owned a few different modern represses and none of them compared so I sold them off and strictly play this one.
Wel
Just not true. You hate represses, so why make up that you have had "a few different represses?" Read this guy's other posts.

Boy this is a great pressing! Recommended, especially the Golden mastering as mentioned below. Lovely, warm and big sounding.Vinyl is beautifully pressed, quiet and flat.
Rexfire
Guess i'll step a bit out of line when i say that i believe this music and voice to be quite boring?
Hugifyn
What a nice pressing. Seriously. I have gotten so much warped/noisy/questionable new vinyl, and everything about this one is beautiful. The record feels substantial, the edges are nicely smoothed down, there is very very little appreciable surface noise. On top of that, the John Golden cut/master is IMHO, the best sounding version of ITAOTS on vinyl.
Kardana
Just compared this to my original pressing, which weighs in the neighborhood of 130g since that's the only damn way to differentiate the releases. This pressing sounds clean and crisp, but seems lack some of the top end the original pressing has. I'm not sure if it was mixed differently or digitally transferred or what, but it sounds very good overall, and is a lot more affordable. Highly recommended!
Zaryagan
how can i tell if my copy is the 1998 press or the 2004 repress? there doesn't seem to be any indicator..
Adoraris
I've got the same problem. Labels look alike. Matrix code match. It's not a gatefold. I tried weighing mine and it showed 133 g. So it might be this: Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, but a seller describes one under here as weighing 150 g. Found a solution?
Zulkigis
Was this version sold individually at NMH shows? Unless it was made officially available separately from NMH Vinyl Box Set then it probably shouldn't have its own release page.
Sorryyy
Fantastic sound quality. Feels like they're performing right in front of you.
Skrimpak
I just got two copies of this press and one the vinyl label is darker. The other its exactly how it looks on the discog picture. Does anyone have a first press where the label doesn’t quite match the “off-white” depicted here?
Forey
Shoot I opened the can of worms on myself. I think I have the ‘Repress’ its 145ish grams, but I DO have the barcode still intact and it matches the code on this first press
Duktilar
Own this for the soul reason that you can tell people you own an album about Anne Frank on vinyl.

Unfortunately the sleeve of my copy of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is sadly in a quite bad condition. I wonder if anyone else has had this issue? Please read on. My mam’s toyboy Gavin’s 4 and a 1/2 year old son from another relationship “Tristan” somehow got his hands on the album a few weeks ago while I was away on one of my orienteering weekends, and he drew a funny face on the drum head part, using pink crayon. I think my mam or Gavin gave him some of my records to play with while they went upstairs to make love but I can’t prove that. All I know is I had to tippex out the funny face and now it looks really scruffy, Luckily the record itself was not harmed at all but if anyone has a spare cover they can send me for free please email me at once!!
Thomeena
I have a Jeff Mangum signed edition of this. Record and sleeve are in mint condition. Looking at getting around £100. PM if interested.
Umrdana
I’ve got a spare copy of this signed by Jeff Mangum that I’m happy to part with. Give me a shout if you’re interested.
Abuseyourdna
i personally cant say anything that hasnt already been said about this album or pressing, but yes it's warm and gives me good feelings. only thing to comment is that it personally feels heavier than 180 grams compared to other records rated as such in my collection.
Doulkree
If anyone has the 23003 version of this album, please add this to your collection instead Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Zicelik
Agree with others this is a superb pressing of an excellent album. It didn't 'click' right away - it's a grower for sure - an arty, noisy, strange and beautifully messy grower...
Gelgen
Just letting people know to throw away any clear or especially pink sleeves you get with RTI releases. They can damage your vinyl.
Quamar
Look in the edit release notes, I think someone fucked up because the variant 2 runouts match the original more than variant A. I think it should be another issue with an unknown release date.

My copy of this release is on fairly flat vinyl with slight surface noise and occasional light pops (not cleaned). The sound stage is big with good separation. Guitars, vocals and horns have a great natural sound, but some mid and high frequency detail is missing as compared to the reissue. The overall tone is warm. This is a brilliant album and this release is worth owning as an archive first pressing. (Rega Planar 3, Exact 2 cart, PSE Studio SL, Linn LK85, Linn interconnects, Linn Katans)

My copy of this release is on very flat vinyl with very little surface noise but pretty regular light pops (not cleaned). I do think it sounds more open and detailed than my first release copy. The soundstage is big with great separation, especially the horns. The vocals are a bit hidden on some tracks and the drums are occasionally at little subdued, but this is lo-fi grit at its best. Great grungy guitars. The natural sound of the horns is pretty damn amazing. A great and interesting album to hear start to finish. I recommend. If you have OCD, prepare yourself for some frequency hiss and distortion. It grows on you. (Rega Planar 3, Exact 2 cart, PSE Studio SL, Linn LK85, Linn interconnects, Linn Katans)
Mardin
Interesting. So this is a new mastering then? I have the box and there the runouts match the original according to discogs at least. To me the box sounds pretty great on the simpler tracks but when it gets busy on tracks like Holland 1945 its toned down, probably to be more trackable. It doesnt help that its the second to last song on side A either. Do you experience the same on the original? Because if so I imagine they just made new stampers from that.
Marelyne
I've had this record for ages now, so I'm not sure if there's any point in reviewing it. But I thought I would anyway, since I used to listen to this on my old, crappy turntable setup that I had in college and tonight, for the first time, am listening to it on a quality system (it's been a few years since I last broke this one out). And good lord, it's magnificent. I've always enjoyed their music, but now I see why they were so critically acclaimed; when you hear this on the proper stereo equipment, it's really transcendental music. This particular pressing is fantastic and sounds pretty much flawless.
The Rollers of Vildar
I can confirm that this pressing is superb. And the music is obviously some of the greatest ever recorded.
Cordanius
I believe this is the best packaged vinyl i own with the clear plastic inner sleeve and lyrics sheet, adding to the fact that it's 180gr. Also with the download code, even if you dont use those they are nice to have. The vocals sound a bit overwhelmed by the music but it's alright anyway, i like it.
Fenritaur
Really amazing pressing, I highly recommend it. Classic album too
Kearanny
Fantastic pressing, Quiet and without any pops or ticks. And some more words.
Hilarious Kangaroo
gorgeous pressing, sounds so warm, couldn't be happier! Though the front cover picture seems quite low-quality?
Anarius
My version has the Matrix/ RunoutREWIGLP21 A2 BE39693-01 A3 on side one andREWIGLP21 B2 BE39693-01 B3 on side two. Can anyone please confirm, that this is the 2005 US reissue by Domino?
Modar
My copy had a vinyl swirl glued to the edge of the record (probably a pressing residual) i had to remove it with my nail.A part from that it sounds great.
Dagdatus
Very nice pressing, no issues whatsoever. Clean sound, flat record.Recommended.
Xcorn
This one is a nice pressing. Comes in a polylined innersleeve. Record is flat, clean, no clicks and scratches. Just pure sound. Recommended.
Niwield
Record sounds great and I'm glad to announce after trying and shelving this album many times, right now listening I'm totally digging it. I like lots of weird music with weird noises and crazy vocals, but I couldn't do this guy's voice for the longest time. Seems that months of sitting there on the shelf begging me to give it another try paid off... Awesome stuff
Skilkancar
mine has a clear plastic inner sleeve that came with the record
Marg
I received a clear inner sleeve as well. Seems to be more common than the pink variant.
Arador
Misprint on lyric sheet; The King Of Carrot Flowers Pt. One, "and your mom would sink until she was no longer speaking"(and your mom would drink until she was no longer speaking)
Berenn
My version has a matrix/runout that states the number 23003.1(3) (side A) and 23003.2(3) (Side B).
Cezel
Mine did too, and housed in a clear, non-pink matte inner sleeve. If these are represses, I don't know which year they were pressed.
Kipabi
T.J.E - what does your deadwax say? Mine came with a clear/matte inner sleeve and 23003.1(3) / 23003.2(5). It's 180g and came with download code. Sounds excellent.   jhodgeofva - get over yourself.
Milleynti
This album is the greatest. I love it so much I need to get this on vinyl. Anyways great album.
lucky kitten
Any other ways to differentiate this from the reissue would be appreciated. The MRG 136 Are1 ② GS 1938.1(3) imprint is unique but the parts that are different are very very tiny and faintly etched, so it is easy to doubt yourself when trying to ID.
Irostamore
Weight is how I've done it, and it's an inexact science. As one reviewer said, the dynamics and in my listening the top end differentiate this pressing from the 180g RP.
Mopimicr
Yeah I'm trying to differentiate these as well. According to this site the re1 ② and decimal points in 1938.1(3) and 1938.2(3) indicate it is the '98 version. Also this one doesn't include a download code and has paper sleeves but like the other user said, it's not the best proof.
Wire
Reissue is on 180 gram vinyl, this release is on average thickness, slightly pliable vinyl. Only other differentiation is that the reissue comes in a translucent pink plastic sleeve and this has a plain white paper sleeve but that can't be counted on as concrete differentiation proof.
Vichredag
Mine didn't come in a pink sleeve; is this an error in the info or a weird problem with mine?
allegro
T.J.E Mine didn't come in a pink sleeve; is this an error in the info or a weird problem with mine? You might have gotten another release. If its a paper one and the record feels kinda light and not 180 grams it might be the original release.

"In the Aeroplane over the sea" is the second (and breakout) album by indie rock band Neutral Milk Hotel. This album has been praised by many reviewers and "hipsters", rated highly in many lists and all. Personally, I think that it's just a case of the emperor has no clothes. The lyricism on this record is horriffic. They make little sense and are just flat out weird. For example is:"Oh how I remember youHow I would push my fingers throughYour mouth to make those muscles moveThat made your voice so smooth and sweet""Semen stains the mountain tops" "She will feed you tomatoes and radio wiresAnd retire to sheets safe and cleanBut don't hate her when she gets up to leave"For me, the worst track on here is "Oh Comely", 8 minutes of noise and unholiness that could make anybody's ear bleed. The best track - and saving grace for the record - is "Holland 1945", a poetic punk masterpiece. Just goes to show that under a pile of crap can be one diamond.Overall, this is their worst record IMO. A huge disappointment compared to "On Avery Island", a true indie rock masterpiece

Yeah you're right Magnum should write lyrics YOU approve of. Also nice review by cherry-picking lyrics and reacting "omgg sew weerd!"
Madis
To further his point, the whole record is based on the story that Jeff Mangum read Anne Franks diary and decided they were soulmates. That's the reason for the sexual writing. The record as a whole is basically stating that Anne Frank and him are chasing each other over the decades through the Buddhist idea of reincarnation.
Thofyn
You know the lyrics are all about Anne Frank--so the first lines are in reference to reading her book as a way of giving her voice--though it's also erotic, as the next line you picked out highlights.
Arlelond
I know a lot of people who hate this album, but I love it. Jeff Mangum's voice is definately an acquired taste. On first listen it sounds like whiney emo crap with some horns and acoustic ballads, but after a while the nightmarish and phantasmagoric lyrics worm their way into your brain in spite of the eerily "happy" music. Some of the songs here venture onto surreal hallucinatory planes that Syd Barrett only touched upon (the centerpeice, "Oh Comely," is particularly vivid). And yet it's all somehow hopeful and life-affirming. It's a concept album about life, death, rebirth, family life, the Holocaust and Anne Frank, I guess. I'll be damned if I can make heads or tails of it.
